You shouldn’t contact any business or consumer that has signed up to the Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS), the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) for consumers, or the Mailing Preference Service (MPS). With our bureau services, we’ll suppress these people from your databases and ensure your marketing activities remain compliant.
With this data suppression service, we will remove all contacts from your marketing lists who have signed up to prevent the receipt of unsolicited correspondence. Not only will it reduce wastage, but it will also eliminate the chance of being fined £5000 for each illegal contact that is made.
Both the TPS/CTPS and the MPS are official registers which are free for companies and consumers to register with. Any consumer, sole trader and partnership (except in Scotland), can register for these services. The Government doesn’t receive any money from these services, they are paid for by the direct marketing and direct mail industries.
The Telephone Preference Service can be used for any live telephone number, landline or mobile, so for as long as a number is active, it will continue to be registered. Organisations may gather your consent when you first have contact with them and are therefore permitted to phone you if your telephone number is TPS registered, unless you have specifically told them that you object to any phone calls regarding marketing.
Mobile phone numbers can also be registered with the TPS, but this will not prevent unwanted text messages from being received – a request to opt out must be sent to the company. Whilst a TPS registration can prevent unwanted marketing calls, companies can still make contact regarding genuine market research.
The Mailing Preference Service enables consumers to remove their names and addresses from any marketing lists used within the industry. The MPS is actively backed by the Royal Mail, all relevant trade associations, and the Information Commissioners Office. Using the MPS Consumer File is a requirement of the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Code of Practice.
Whilst the MPS will stop the delivery of unwelcome direct mailings sent by any member of the DMA, they will also take action to block the dispatch of uninvited direct mailings from any non-DMA members. Any mail which is unaddressed, sent from abroad, or addressed to The Occupier cannot be stopped. Any mail from organisations that companies have contacted in the past and any local, small companies may still continue to send mailings – these activities all need notification directly in order to stop mailings, which can take up to four months.
